FIBA Americas tries to save Pan American Games' basketball in Guadalajara 2011
9/13/2011

Following a decision of the Mexican Olympic Committee (COM) to not endorse the Mexican Sports Association (ADEMEBA), an organization recognized by FIBA in Mexico and not have the male and female national teams, the FIBA may suspend the ADEMEBA membership and therefore cannot allow countries classified and registered to participate in the Pan American Games 2011.

The Secretary General of FIBA Americas, Mr. Alberto Garcia, knowing the decision of the COM has sent a letter of urgent resolution to the President of the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) Mr. Mario Vazquez Rana and the Director General of the Guadalajara 2011 Games, Mr. Carlos Andrade Garin, in relation to the possibility of basketball not being part of the Games.

Consulted by media in the city of Mar del Plata, Argentina, home of the FIBA Americas Championship, qualifier for the 2012 Olympic Games, Mr. Garcia expressed surprise at the attitude of COM by not recognizing the ADEMEBA and deciding not to have basketball representation, given the fact that the games are at home.

The Secretary General said: "The COM said in their letter that a Judge of the Mexican justice system forced them to recognize a federation that is not recognized by FIBA and therefore decides not to have representation in our sport." He added: "We are sending a letter to PASO and the organizers of Guadalajara to try to reverse this situation, not to harm athletes, many fans that have already bought their tickets and classified countries that have been training their teams for a while in preparation for the games."

To conclude, Garcia said, "If it is not possible to register ADEMEBA teams, FIBA should suspend the affiliation of the Association and therefore cannot allow other affiliated federations to participate in a country where the Olympic Committee does not allow participation by the organization recognized in the host country, who should participate in its own right. I understand that there must be a solution this week and we hope so to get our sport in the Games."
