SUD14W - Brasil announces their 12 for the South American C'ship for Women
8/12/2014

São José dos Campos, SP - The women's national team coach of Brazil, Luiz Augusto Zanon, defined the 12 that will compete in the South American Championship for Women in Ecuador, in the city of Ambato.

Brazil will be in competition for Gold Medal number 25 in the history of the championship and its 15th in a row.

"All the players were very good during training, but we chose to not have Adrianinha in the team to give the opportunity to the younger players to prove themselves. Besides, she had a personal problem and decided not to participate. Sassá already had a crack in a bone in a finger of the right hand and will be out for 15 days, which is a shame because it would have been her first South American championship. We know that Argentina and Chile have been training for some time, but we are optimistic of winning another title.", Zanon said. "This competition will be used to observe the group in the final stages of preparation for the World Championship in Turkey, which is our ultimate goal.", he adds.

The Brazilian team is in the "B" group of the South American Championship and will make their debut against Venezuela this Thursday. Brazil will also have Uruguay (Friday) and Ecuador (Saturday) as adversaries in the first phase. Group "A" has Argentina, Chile, Peru and Paraguay. The top three teams qualify for the Pan American Games in Toronto, while the top four advance to the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship in Edmonton, Canada.

"Our expectation is the highest. Preparation was very good in São José dos Campos, with intensive training and our staff is very competitive. I'm excited because it's my first South American Championship with the senior team. Moreover, Brazil is always the team to beat in this competition.", says Izabela Ramona, São José player.

After the South American Championship, the Brazilian delegation will travel to Europe, where they will compete in the International Tournament in Istanbul, Turkey, on August 22-24 and Limoges, France, on August 26 to 30 in exhibition games that will serve as preparation for the Women’s World Cup in Turkey, which will be held from September 27 to October 5.
