Guillent: "Our focus must be on staying patient"

BARQUISIMETO (DIRECTV Liga Sudamericana 2016) - Guaros de Lara remained unbeaten after defeating Trouville by a score of 84-78, qualifying for the Semi-Final Phase of the DIRECTV Liga Sudamericana 2016 along with Paulista who won over Búcaros in the early game by a score of 87-63.

The Venezuelan club continued what has been a brilliant 2016 campaign in which the team won the DIRECTV Liga de las Americas back in March and the Intercontinental Cup less than a month ago. Against Trouville, the team needed a big fourth quarter and they got it with 30 point performance led by star point guard Heissler Guillent.

Guillent, who was the leading scorer of the team with 20 points in the victory, spoke to after the game. What were the keys to this important victory?
Guillent: Patience against the zone. We were able to break it apart by not being stagnant and not relying too much on our outside shot. That made the difference and made us versatile. We were not three-point heavy, stayed aggressive, drew fouls and were able to score in different ways than usual. We believed in ourselves, kept calm and continued doing what gave us advantage in the game. You were effective tonight, shooting for 63% from the floor and scoring 20 points. How do you assess your performance?
Guillent: The points were there for me tonight. I'm an aggressive player and I like to create opportunities for myself on the offensive side of the court. I have to balance that with my job which is to make it easier for my teammates, involve them in the game and get our team in rhythm. Tonight the shots went in but most important of all is that we got the win. That’s what matters. Guaros achieved its first objective that was qualifying to the semis but Paulistano stands in your way to finish with the first place in Group C. What do you expect from the game?
Guillent: Paulistano is a strong team, that likes to bang inside, pretty physical. From what we have seen they also prefer zone defense. Our focus must be on staying patient, like we did tonight, and at the same time see how we can take advantage of the fact that we have indeed qualified to rest strategically. We have had a very busy schedule in September so we're a bit tired. That does not take away from our effort tomorrow in which we will give everything in order to get that first place. It will be a competitive game and we hope to win it. You have made clear from the very start they you want this championship, the Horacio Muratore Cup, of the DIRECTV Liga Sudamericana. You are continental and intercontinental champions; how do you see the team moving forward?
Guillent: Well, first we're focused on this round. That experience you mentioned has taught us that it is a mistake to look ahead in this type of competition. Every team in the tournament wants the title. We know how difficult it is to make it happen. Therefore, it is important to face every obstacle, every game with a lot of focus and seriousness. Today we qualified, tomorrow we go for first place and then we’ll think of the Semi-Final Phase. Step by step, even though the goal at the end of the road is getting that championship.
