FAU18 – Dominican Republic makes history, wins the bronze medal

Colorado Springs, Colorado – The team led by José Mercedes defeated Argentina, 64-53, to assure their space in the medal ceremony of the FIBA Americas U18 Championship. The Dominican team for the first time ever wins a medal of this tournament and qualifies for the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship.

Dominican Republic and Argentina fought to determine who would be the recipient of the bronze medal of the 2014 U18 FIBA Americas Championship, Argentina rapidly imposed an advantage of 8 - 2, the Dominican offense responded with a run of 12-2 to take the lead in the score, 14 - 10. Weisner Perez scored to give Dominicans a lead of 6 points at the end of the first set, 16-10.

Dominican advantage continued to increase during the first part of the second set; it got to 11 points, 27 – 16. The team led by Eduardo Japez entered a streak, scoring 4 straight points to decrease to 7 the disadvantage. Weisner Perez scored to total to 9 the Dominican advantage. The Dominicans held the lead of 9 points after the first half, 31-22.

With great work on the rebounds from Jhonatan Araujo, 12 rebounds, the Dominican team was able to maintain the lead, thanks to second scoring opportunities. The Argentine team began to move the ball on offense and take better shots, at the end of the third quarter, the Dominican lead was at 6 points, 46-40.

Dominicans kept bringing the ball to their big man, Jhonatan Araujo, who was dominating the paint area. The advantage of Dominicans remained through the rest of the game. The victory and the bronze medal belonged to the team led by Jose Mercedes. The final score was Dominican Republic 64 - Argentina 53. The best scorer for the Dominicans was Jhonatan Araujo with 16 points. The Dominican Republic made history by winning their first medal at a FIBA Americas U18 Championship.
