SPAIN2014 - Napier: "It will be an honor”
4/7/2014

Although he said that all his concentration is on the NCAA Championship game to be held on Monday, point guard Shabazz Napier, of Puerto Rican descent, took time to speak to the press about the possibility of playing for the National Team of Puerto Rico in the next FIBA Basketball World Cup.

"We still have one more game to complete the job," Napier told ESPN Deportes after the Connecticut Huskies overcame Florida State to reach the finals.

"Is an honor to represent my university, my people and Puerto Rico, the country of my family."

The 22 year-old player already practiced with the Puerto Rican team two years ago, but an injury prevented from being included in the team who participated in the Centrobasket held on the island and in the FIBA Americas Championship in Venezuela .

On Saturday, the guard, who is considered the heart of his team and who is expected to be selected this summer in one of the first two rounds of the NBA draft, said he was motivated to be considered for integrating the Boricua team.

"I would love to go and have that experience. It would be something unique and that will definitely help my game for the goals I have set," he said. "It will be an honor."

”But right now, I concentrate on my last game with my university," he added. "Everything I am today as a player, I owe to this school. And as a person, to the education of my mother, who would be proud if I play for Puerto Rico."
