"There will be basketball in the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara"
9/20/2011

It was announced by the Secretary General of FIBA Americas, Mr. Alberto Garcia, after receiving a letter from the ODEPA, in response to the one sent by FIBA Americas on September 11, in which the Pan American Sports Organization agrees to present the women and male basketball teams at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara 2011.

In response to the non-registration of teams by the Mexican Olympic Committee, FIBA Americas had replied to the ODEPA informing that there would not be basketball in Guadalajara 2011 if the institution recognized by FIBA in the country, the Mexican Sports Association Basketball chaired by Dr. Modesto Robledo Robledo, was not respected. After discussions by the highest authorities of the FIBA world basketball and ODEPA, an agreement has come to fruition to guarantee the presence of male and female teams at the Games in Guadalajara.

ODEPA teams will enter under Section XXII of the Statutes and FIBA Americas will present the list of players and their coaching staffs, which will be selected by a special committee with the presence of Dr. Modesto Robledo Robledo on behalf of the Association recognized by FIBA in Mexico.

Mr. Garcia said he was very happy because finally there will be basketball in the Pan American Games and thanked Mr. Mario Vazquez Rana, ODEPA President, for his willingness to resolve this situation that would harm not only athletes from Mexico, but also the countries classified to play in this great competition. He added "Don Mario's decision has been very wise, because if it wasn't done, the organization of the Games would also be affected in other equally important issues, including ticket sales and TV rights to other countries ".

Guadalajara women's basketball will be played from October 21-25 with the participation of the national teams of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Jamaica, Mexico, Puerto Rico and USA.

Meanwhile, men's basketball will be played from October 26-30 with the participation of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, USA and Uruguay.
