#FIBAAmericasWomen2015 – Cuba begins title defense with victory and Canada keeps adding on second day

EDMONTON (2015 FIBA Americas Women’s Championship)- The second day of the 2015 FIBA Americas Women’s Championship handed a new victory to the National Team of Canada and first victories to Argentina, Venezuela and Cuba.

The second day of the FIBA Americas Women’s Championship featured the closest game so far, when Venezuela held on to a slight lead, captured during the fourth quarter, to defeat the National Team of the Virgin Islands, 69 – 62.

Roselis Silva had another impressive performance, with 31 points and 5 steals, as Oscar Silva’s team leveled its record at one.

Silva now leads the tournament in points, with 22.5 points per game.

After resting during the first day of competition, Argentina made their debut at the continental championship with a Group B match-up against Ecuador. Argentina’s suffocating defense held off the Ecuadorian team to an 11 point first half, setting the road to their win.

The final score was Argentina 70 – Ecuador 35.

Canada added another impressive win, this time over Chile, 93 – 36.

Lisa Thomaidis team dominated from start to finish, with five players scoring in double digits, and the team shooting for a 44 percent from the field.

Chile had a big scare during the game, after star player and team captain, Ziomara Morrison had to leave the game, with an injured back. Ricardo Gonzalez’s team will now doubt, take full advantage of their day off tomorrow, for the recovery of the player, who scored an impressive 28 points, during their opener versus the Dominican Republic.

The defending champs of the FIBA Americas Championship, started their title defense with a dominating victory over the National Team of the Dominican Republic, 83 -44.

Cuba showed great unselfishness on offensive and started the new edition on the right foot.

The MVP of the 2013 continental women’s championship, Yamara Amargo led the offensive for the Cubans with 25 points.
